What is Component 4C?
Component 4C outlines the need for teachers to communicate with students' families to keep them involved and updated on the students' progress.
Why is Component 4C important?
The teacher must have open communication with families because different scenarios at home would result in different levels of availability to participate. It is the teacher's responsibility to ensure that parents know what there student is doing in school, no matter what the situation in the home is. With students of all ages, including high schoolers, it is absolutely essential that the parents be involved with the learning process. The teacher's efforts also convey a concern for the well-being of the student, and a determination to see the student's needs met, no matter what sacrifices he might have to make.
What are the elements of Component 4C?
The first element of Component 4C refers to the communication of the instructional program. The teacher must make sure the parents know any significant topics that their child is learning about, while that information is still relevant. The students can even participate in this communication, resulting in their taking ownership of the product, as well as practicing their own communication skills. Examples that students could work with for the parents would be a podcast, newsletter, or blog.
The second element of Component 4C includes the communication of the performance of the individual student. The parents need to be made aware of how their child is doing in the class, and of any issues that need to be taken care of. While this is all essential information to communicate, it is also important that the teacher keep in mind the home situations that he is writing to. He must be careful to inform without offending anyone by wording or expectations.
The third element of Component 4C calls for engagement of the families in the instructional program. The teacher should attempt to provide opportunities for the families to be involved in the workings of the classroom, whether this is through creating supplies, providing input, or actually showing up to the classroom. Sometimes it may be appropriate for the students to suggest opportunities for family involvement as well.
What are some artifacts demonstrating Component 4C?
Some artifacts for Component 4C may include newsletters or podcasts that the students contribute to, a tool such as Remind or ClassDojo that can be used to communicate broadly or specifically with the parents, and a spreadsheet of all communications to show that the teacher is organized and intentional about communications.
