Service learning project
As my service learning project, I led a session at a "Teacher Tech Thursday." Prior to the session, I downloaded the Chromville app and learned how to use it so that I could show others at the session. On the day of the session, I had a desk in a room with a number of rotation stations, and I displayed the app for people as the rotated to my desk. I helped them download the app in some cases, and I showed them how to use it, and what different capabilities it had. The function of the app is to scan a picture on a paper, and bring the picture to life in 3D on the device screen. I showed the users how to scan the pictures so that the app would recognize them, then I showed them the different functions that the app had, for example, clicking different portions of the picture on the screen to label items in the picture.
As part of the project, I was able to learn about an app with which I was not familiar, using a concept that was completely foreign to me. I was able to learn about an area of technology that I did not know existed, and I was able to perfect my knowledge to the extent that I would be able to teach others about it. I was also challenged to think of practical applications for the app in the classroom, which would not necessarily be obvious upon first use. In addition to my own learning, I was able to help others to learn about the app, and how to most effectively use it. I learned about the concept myself, but I also was able to show others how it works and how they could personally use it.
Service Learning is the method of learning in which the student learns by performing a functional task for the community. Sometimes this looks like designing buildings for a community, and sometimes it is showing elderly people how to use the internet. Service learning is a growing method of instruction, as it not only develops knowledge in the student, but it also enhances comprehension, as the student is required to practically apply the knowledge. Besides significantly benefiting the students, service learning also helps to develop the community, and build a sense of unity among the people of the community. When students are assisting others in the community, and those in the community are allowed to help students by being helped, the community is connected together because of their new found common ground, and able to identify with each other, and understand the struggles of those with which the do not regularly associate.
My specific service learning project fits into Component 4E, Growing and Developing Professionally. Through the project, I was able to accomplish the first element, Enhancement of Content Knowledge and Pedagogical Skill. I learned about the app itself, and Augmented Reality as a whole, but I was also able to teach the material to other educators who wanted to develop their own resource bases.
As a result of this project, I was made more comfortable regarding the idea of presenting to people, specifically to other educators, and about technological tools. I previously was very intimidated by technology, but this service learning project is part of what allowed me to see it as a valuable resource that can be explored and used to the advantage of the body of educators, but most importantly to the students.
