growing and developing professionally
What is Component 4E?
Component 4E emphasizes the growth process involved in being a professional educator. A teacher must always be learning in his content area, as well as expanding his understanding of pedagogy. This can be done through research, volunteering with projects, and communication and collaboration with colleagues.
Why is it important?
Component 4E is important because the teacher is responsible for continuing his learning even after he has completed his official schooling. He must have a holistic comprehension of his subject, as well as an understanding of how students best learn the material. This must be expanded into a knowledge of his specific students, and their learning styles. Teachers can gather this knowledge from their coworkers. Other teachers around the world can enrich a teacher's understanding of pedagogy, and teaching styles, and local teachers have more experience, and ideas for dealing with specific staff members and students. Learning how to communicate with both types of colleagues for the benefit of the teachers, the students, and the field of education is one essential focus of Component 4E.
What are the elements of Component 4E?
The first element of Component 4E calls for enhancement of content knowledge, and pedagogical skill. Teachers must stay up to date with content knowledge and breakthroughs, as well as new styles of pedagogy. This means that a teacher must seek out academic journals, conferences, and workshops to take part in and learn from.
The second element of Component 4E encourages teachers to be open to feedback from colleagues. A teacher must be able to humbly take into account every piece of constructive criticism, and harness it to make his teaching style the best that it can be. A teacher must be able to accept correction, and use others' ideas for improvement. The teacher must also take advice from administration into account, and use it to his students' advantage.
The third element of Component 4E explains the necessity of not only growing as an educator, but also of growing the educational profession to make learning and teaching easier for future educators, and more effective for future students. Teachers should make a habit of attending workshops to grow themselves, and also of running workshops and sharing ideas to help others to grow. Current teachers are responsible not only for their students, but also for other teachers, other students, and future teachers and their students.
