participating in the professional community
What is Component 4d?
Component 4d is the section of the Danielson Framework that emphasizes the importance of growing as an educator, through cooperating with other educators. Even though the teacher has completed all of the formal learning upon graduation from whatever education he decides to pursue, a teacher always has more material left that he can learn. Much of this material comes from collaborating with other teachers, and discussing ideas with them.
Why is that important?
An educator has the responsibility of being a role model for his students, sometimes more so than the students' own families. One thing that the teacher can show for his students is that learning is enjoyable and vital. If a student sees his teacher still learning and seeking to discover all that he can, even after having completed sixteen or more years of schoolwork, the student will be more likely to respect the teacher, the topic, and learning in general. Learning is also important to the teacher because as material is updated, and teaching methods are updated along with it, the teacher needs to stay up to date on the subject. Not only must the teacher stay up to date on what he has known, but there is also always more to learn about content or pedagogy that a teacher can learn from conversing with other educators.
What are the elements of Component 4d?
There are four specific ways listed in Domain 4d for a teacher to participate in the professional community. The first way is by developing relationships with colleagues. Teachers within a school can help each other out in a significant way because they have the same experiences with students and staff, and can help each other out in dealing with issues that arise. Colleagues also need to be in touch to have a firm relationship, in case they want to collaborate on a project or class.
The second way is by becoming involved in a culture of professional inquiry. With different social media, and the ability to trade ideas with educators from all around the world, it is beneficial for a teacher to make connections with others via the internet, in order to gain new tools from others that were previously inaccessible. Additionally, there may be times when the teacher is asked to lead a class, workshop, or seminar that he needs help learning how to teach.
The third way to participate is through service to the school. The teacher can volunteer for various projects throughout the school in order to show the students what it is to be a servant leader. The students see the teacher going out of his way to help the school function at its best, and they are inspired to act the same way, both in the immediate future, and in subtle ways throughout the rest of their lives.
The final way to participate in the professional community is to take part in school and district projects. Besides stepping up to lead school projects for students to observe, the teacher can be a critical part of the running of the school, and the development of the pleasant atmosphere of the community.
What are some possible artifacts for that?
I have participated in the Polk Ministries group, spending time in a home with adults with special needs. Another group that I participate in is the Koinonia Gospel Team, which is a campus singing group that sings for different organizations and gatherings on and off campus. I have also volunteered at a horse boarding farm every morning for three years. More relevantly, I have volunteered as a babysitter for Ladies' Bible Studies for over five years.
